Rotary
Club of Chatham presents Zany Lane at the James M. Hill High School,
Oct
4

The Rotary Club of Chatham is very proud to announce that they are, once
again, bringing a fantastic children’s entertainment duo to the Miramichi.
On October 4, Zany Lane will put on two high-energy
performances that are both educational and fun. The shows are an interactive
experience
that includes audience participation by the kids in the crowd. The kids
may have an opportunity to be involved in the songs while playing and
acting along with Steve and Erica. Zany Lane will engage
the kids in the musical adventure and the kids will become as much as
the show as Zany
Lane! It will be an unforgettable stroll down one of the
Zaniest Lane’s in the neighbourhood – Don’t miss it!!
We’ll see you all on Zany Lane.
Steve Zaat and Erika Lane - otherwise known as Zany Lane,
the fastest rising children’s entertainment act on the East Coast will
be performing
at the James M. Hill High School, Sunday, Oct 4. at 2pm and 4 pm as
special family presentations by The Rotary Club of Chatham. Tickets
are $8 each
or $30 for a family of 4. Tickets are available at Bill’s Kwik Mart
and Books Inn in Miramichi.

I usually look back at the previous
year’s
music and put together my top-10 list for the year, but I have the
future on my mind so I decided
to give you the top-10-artist-you-should-watch-out-for list for 2009.
To make it even more special I’m not going to name-check anything on
the national or international scene. This comprehensive list of music you
should know will be all Maritime-grown.
These new sounds will help get you through the winter blues and will inevitably
usher us into the warmer care-free summer months and back into our windswept
autumn beauty before the snow falls once again. Here are the Maritime
artists both established and newly-born that will make up your soundtrack
for 2009! Check them out and support homegrown talent!
1. Matt Andersen - www.stubbyfingers.ca
2. JD Fortune - www.thedeathofamotivationalspeaker.com
3. Meaghan Smith - www.meaghansmith.com
4. Babette Hayward - www.myspace.com/babettehayward
5. Heckman & Downes - www.myspace.com/theshaggydogs
6. Jon Mullane - www.jonmullane.com
7. Zany Lane - www.atlanticalive.com/zanylane
8. Karen Palmer - www.karenpalmermusic.com
9. Zwerg - www.zwerg.ca
10. Clinton Charlton - www.myspace.com/clintoncharlton
There are also some other artists I believe will have a banner year and
I wanted to mention them as well: Christina Martin, Keith Hallet, Dave
Carroll, Penny Blacks, White Rabbit, Chris Picco, The Hupman Brothers,
Ross Neilsen, Norma Macdonald, Jill Barber and Jens Jeppesen. You can
find most of this music at Backstreet Records in Saint John along with
a nice array of new and old vinyl.
Some not-to-be-missed shows coming up include the Olympic Symphonium with
Babette Hayward at the Shadow Lawn Inn in Rothesay, Jan. 9 at 8 p.m. For
ticket information call the inn at 847-7539.
Also on Jan. 9 at 8 p.m. in the city at Thandi's is the ever-popular
Jimmy Hadley playing songs from his well-crafted original debut CD along
with
wonderful interpretations of Elvis classics as well as Roy Orbison.
On Jan. 14 at 10 p.m. at Melvin's in the city local starlets Karen Palmer
and Babette Hayward share the stage with Moncton's The Tireless Sedans.
There are lots of great nights of music coming up so make a point of making
a night of it by seeing some Maritime talent.
Let me know if you know of any music I should be aware of whether it be
local or anywhere in the province and maybe I can feature them in a future
article. Rock on Valley music lovers! The Music Man!

Thousands turn out for New Year's celebrations
Published Thursday January 1st, 2009

SAINT JOHN - For most of the little ones, New Year’s Eve ended with
the sky lit up in greens blues and purples as fireworks exploded
over Saint
John Harbour. For some of their parents, the night was likely much
longer, with bubbly popped at midnight.
Thousands left their homes to celebrate as the city said goodbye to
2008 and hello to 2009. Some chose to go skating at various locations
in the area, such as the East Point Shopping centre, which officially
opened its outdoor arena
for the
season.
Natasha Dean and her children Devon, 6 and Hali, 5, were among the first
ones trying out the new skating rink. "It's fun because you
can skate really fast," Hali said, adding she
likes New Year's Eve "because you can skate a lot." Meanwhile,
Market Square was alive with excited children running around blowing
noisemakers as hundreds came out to take part in the festivities.
"Monkey jumper, monkey jumper, up, down, all around, c'mon make some monkey
sounds," sang Steve Zaat and Erica Lane of the children's
entertainment group Zany Lane, while enthusiastic youngsters
wearing Happy New Year hats jumped around. "It was fun," said
Matthew Marshall, 9. "There was dancing
and everything." "It was probably one of our best shows
that we've done," Erica Lane said. "We're
all about crowd interaction and engaging the kids, so I thought it
went very well."
Dozens of children were huddled as close to the 60-centimetre-high stage
as possible hoping they would be chosen as volunteers for the next interactive
song.
"When we can get them up on stage, and they're thrilled and the parents
are thrilled, it just makes for a really good show," Lane said.
New Year's Eve got started in the afternoon for many celebrants. The
New Brunswick Museum offered free admission all afternoon and the Saint
John
Sea Dogs faced off against the Moncton Wildcats at Harbour Station at
4 p.m. Unfortunately for the hometown fans, the Sea Dogs lost 3-2, but
the
game attracted Steven Craig, his family and a friends family, all of
whom would usually celebrate the new year at one of their houses.
"(The hockey game) was fun for all the children," Craig said.
The group then headed over to Market Square for more fun.
"Some of my kids are down getting hats "| then we'll go watch the fireworks," Craig
said.
Matthew Marshall was most excited about the pyrotechnic show.
"Every year me, my nanny and my brother always go to the window of our apartment
and watch it," he said. "But we thought this year we'd
come down here and watch it so we'd get a better view of it."
Once the music stopped in the Market Square atrium at 7:30 p.m., the
crowed poured out onto the boardwalk into the -9 C air, with a stiff
breeze that
made the temperature seem like -18 C. As the loud bangs erupted and
the sky was sprinkled with colours, the crowd began to ooohh and ahhh.
"
They were awesome," said Logan Leadbeater, 6. "They were
boomy. Yeah, they were pretty good."
